Israel Gaza War

Report: 16. June 2024

Hezbollah has launched dozens of rockets into Israel following the killing of one of its commanders in an Israeli strike attack.

Hezbollah buries one of its most senior commanders Taleb Sami Abdullah.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for 17 operations against Israel on Wednesday, eight of which were in retaliation for the killing of Taleb Abdullah and three other fighters.

The targets included Israeli military headquarters in Ein Zeitim and Ami'ad, a military air surveillance station in Meron, and a "military factory" in Sasa.

Hashem Safieddine, the head of Hezbollah's Executive Council, stated at Abdullah’s funeral in Beirut that Israel had not learned from past experiences. He also emphasized that the resistance would intensify operations following the assassinations.

The IDF reported that Abdullah and three other Hezbollah operatives were killed in a strike on a Hezbollah command-and-control center in the village of Jouaiyya on Tuesday night. Abdullah was described as one of Hezbollah’s most senior commanders in southern Lebanon, with accusations of planning and carrying out numerous terror attacks against Israeli civilians.

Lebanese security sources revealed that Abdullah was Hezbollah’s commander for the central region of the southern border strip and held a higher rank than Wissam Tawil, a commander of the elite Radwan Force who was killed in an Israeli strike in January.

After rocket fire sparked wildfires that burned through 3,500 acres of land in northern Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed readiness for "a very strong action in the north" to restore security.

The IDF’s chief of staff, Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, also stated that his forces were "ready to move to an offensive" against Hezbollah.

Hezbollah used two self-detonating drones to attack northern Israel, according to the Israeli army.

Following the launch of projectiles from Lebanon towards Israel, an Israeli soldier is seen providing assistance to an injured comrade in Hurfeish, Israel on Wednesday, June 5.

The Israeli military has reported that Hezbollah militants in Lebanon launched at least two explosive UAVs in an attack on Hurfeish, a Druze Arab village in northern Israel on Wednesday evening. Nine people were treated for shrapnel injuries sustained in the drone strikes, according to the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, including a woman who suffered abdominal and chest injuries, with her condition described as moderate to serious.

The Israeli army has not commented on the identity of the injured, but according to reporters, soldiers were among those wounded. Video obtained by the agency showed an ambulance moving several injured soldiers from the scene. In one clip, a paramedic can be seen carrying a uniformed Israeli soldier on his back toward an ambulance. The soldier was conscious with his head raised and did not appear to be badly injured.

An eyewitness told Israel’s Channel 11 that the second self-detonating drone exploded as emergency responders arrived on the scene to treat patients injured in the first drone strike.

Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for the recent attack, which occurred amid heightened tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border. According to the Israeli military, there were approximately 30 rockets and drones launched from Lebanon towards Israel on Wednesday. In response, Israeli fighter jets targeted Hezbollah positions. The military stated that the strikes included targeting terrorist infrastructure in Naqoura and Matmoura, Hezbollah military structures in Ayta ash Shab, and a Hezbollah observation post in Khiam.

At least 10 people were injured in northern Israel after Hezbollah launched an attack from Lebanon.

Following a reported Hezbollah attack from Lebanon on Wednesday, June 5, emergency personnel responded near Hurfeish, Israel, as per report.

In northern Israel on Wednesday, a drone attack by the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon resulted in at least 10 people being injured, according to Israeli authorities.

The Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service said that one person was severely injured, one was moderately injured, and eight were lightly injured. An MDA ambulance driver was also injured by shrapnel when he arrived at the scene of the attack.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that several launches from Lebanon fell in the town of Hurfeish in northern Israel. They stated that no sirens were sounded and that the incident is under review.

According to an Israeli military source speaking to CNN, it is believed that Hezbollah militants launched at least one explosive unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the assault.

Tensions between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah have escalated in recent months, with Hezbollah increasing attacks on Israel's border as a protest against Israel's actions in Gaza. Just this week, cross-border attacks from Lebanon led to large fires in Israel's northern region, resulting in the burning of land and evacuations.

Israel conducted an airstrike on a Gaza school on Thursday, targeting and eliminating Hamas fighters inside. Meanwhile, a Hamas official alleged that 40 individuals, including women and children seeking refuge at the U.N. site in Nuseirat, central Gaza, lost their lives. Ismail Al-Thawabta, the director of the Hamas-run government media office, refuted Israel's assertion that the U.N. school had been concealing a Hamas command post.

The occupation uses false stories to justify the crime it conducted against displaced people," Thawabta told reporters. Israel's military said it took steps to protect civilians before its fighter jets carried out a "precise strike," sharing satellite photos highlighting parts of a building where it said fighters were based. "We're confident in the intelligence," military spokesperson Lt. Col. Peter Lerner told reporters, accusing Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters of using U.N. facilities as operational bases.

He reported that there were 20-30 fighters located in the compound, with many of them having been killed. However, he did not have precise details as intelligence assessments were still ongoing. He also stated, "I'm not aware of any civilian casualties and I'd be very, very cautious of accepting anything that Hamas puts out." The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) communications director, Juliette Touma, mentioned that the school, which is run by the agency, may have been hit multiple times.

The United States remains “incredibly concerned” about the risk of escalation on the Israel-Lebanon border, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Wednesday.

Miller restated on Wednesday that the current situation in Israel is untenable, with tens of thousands of Israelis unable to return to their homes in the north due to constant Hezbollah shelling and drone attacks. According to Miller, the Israeli government has privately communicated to the US that their preferred solution to this conflict is a diplomatic one. He also emphasized the significance of a ceasefire in Gaza, stating that it would pave the way for achieving lasting calm in the north.
